Free event in Reno on March 26 focuses on issues affecting minority health. The Gathering Place is hosting a public forum on “The Rising Cost of Chronic Disease” on March 26 at the Renaissance Reno Downtown Hotel beginning at 11:30 a.m. with a complimentary luncheon. According to the Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease, 1.7 million Nevadans had at least one chronic disease and 693,000 had two or more chronic diseases in 2015. The projected overall cost of chronic disease in years 2016-2030 in Nevada is $401 billion. Many minority groups have higher prevalence rates for heart disease, cancer, diabetes and stroke leading to increased rates of disability and death. You are invited to join The Gathering Place and the Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease for this March 26 public forum to learn about the ways in which Nevada and other states are attempting to reduce accelerating costs and provide appropriate mechanisms for health care providers to adequately care for patients, especially those in the minority population. Keynote speaker will be Dr. Kenneth Thorpe, professor of health policy and chair of the Department of Health Policy and Management in the Rollins School of Public Health of Emory University in Atlanta. Dr. Thorpe, along with local speakers, will bring key information on the role that chronic disease plays in the growth in health care spending. Information on reserving a seat is available on the flier attached below. This event is announced as part of the Department of Health and Human Services’ ongoing effort to promote minority consumer education.
