White paper and article discuss issues surrounding antibiotic use and resistance Overuse of antibiotics and the resulting resistance to them is an ongoing concern in Nevada and around the world. A new article about this issue is called “Antibiotic Stewardship – A Call to Action #5 - Focus on Outpatients,” and appears on page 11 of the August 2017 issue of Nevada RNformation. The article is authored by Norman Wright, RN, MS, a infection prevention specialist at Kindred Hospital-Sahara in Las Vegas.
The Nevada Office of Public Health Informatics and Epidemiology is also recommending a white paper from the American Nurses Association (ANA) discussing nurses’ pivotal role in antibiotic stewardship. The white paper focuses on nurses’ role in antibiotic stewardship efforts in four key areas:

Openings for Northern Nevada course from University of Nevada Cooperative Extension A Child Development Associate (CDA) credential program is a great way for teachers of infants/toddlers to make a huge difference in the future development of children in their care. University of Nevada Cooperative Extension (UNCE) is offering infant/toddler courses for teachers who work at currently licensed child care centers anywhere in Nevada. Currently, there are openings available in Northern Nevada for the program that begins in October or November (exact schedule to be determined). The fall 2017 CDA programs in Clark County for preschool-age children and infants/toddlers are full; another program is expected to be available for infant/toddler teachers across Nevada in September 2018. This day-long educational event will be held at locations in Reno and Las Vegas, and features eight sessions on topics ranging from antibiotic length of use and two-step C. diff testing, to managing sepsis in skilled nursing facilities and outpatient stewardship. Eight hours of continuing education credit for nursing are available for attendees. This event is co-sponsored by the Division of Public and Behavioral Health and HealthInsight Nevada. Technical bulletin gives important information for residential facilities for groups Medication management curricula and instructors must be approved by the Bureau of Health Care Quality and Compliance (HCQC) to provide training to caregivers who work in residential facilities for groups and administer medications to residents. The bulletin contains information for initial approval, re-approval, course monitoring, initial and renewal certification for instructors and quality assurance monitoring and accountability.
