Bills to follow in Nevada Legislature Several proposed laws that will affect dietitians are being considered in the current session of the Nevada Legislature: SB 234 – requiring the Commissioner of Insurance to collect certain information from providers of health care (including dietitians), establish a database comprised of such information and compile an annual report concerning such information; requiring the Commissioner to develop a form letter to provide certain notice to providers of health care relating to participation in the network of a health carrier. Under this proposal, dietitians will be required to submit a letter as proof of compliance with the submission of the required data each time a Nevada license is renewed. SB 95 – requires certain medical facilities to adhere to a diet that is ordered or prescribed for a patient; authorizing a dietitian to order a special diet or nutritional supplement for a patient in certain circumstances. Each of the bills is hyperlinked to the Nevada Legislature’s web page where you can track their progress through the legislative process, including scheduled meetings where the public can testify. Minimum education requirements and survey Starting in 2024, individuals who want to sit for the registration exam with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics must have a graduate degree from a U.S. regionally accredited college or university or foreign equivalent, an Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD), and an ACEND supervised practice program (coordinated, dietetic internship or individualized supervised practice program). Historically, a bachelor’s degree was the minimum requirement, and the change to a graduate degree was approved in April 2013. For more information about the change, visit the FAQs page from the Commission on Dietetic Registration. In light of this change, the Bureau of Health Care Quality and Compliance, which licenses dietitians in Nevada, has created a brief survey to assess the current state of education among dietitians in the state.
